Instagram Is Testing a New Home Feed Feature: What Does This Mean for Marketers?

Instagram just keeps rolling out new updates almost every week. The latest update by the platform has taken the internet by storm. Although it is still in beta testing mode for some users, the update has drastically changed how we consume content on the app.

Last week Hats-Off posted a reel on the latest Instagram update that aims to ‘bring video more front and center’ on the social media platform. Instagram’s CEO, Adam Mosseri, announced that they are testing out a new feature to increase the immersive experience on the main Home feed of the Instagram app.

This feature will focus on making videos a more significant part of the feed by taking up bigger space. Both photos and video will take more screen space and have a taller format. Images that are not formatted as per the new 9:16 ratio will have a blurred border in the background.

These feed changes aim to learn how people interact on mobile devices and if a 9:16 format is better for a mobile-first experience.

It could be coming from the influence of competitors like TikTok, which already has a full-screen by default. Much like the platform, posts on Instagram’s main feed will take up the entire screen, and users will need to swipe up to skip to the next post. During its Q1 2022 earnings call, Meta -parent company to Instagram- announced that Reels now makes up more than 20% of the time that users spend on Instagram.

In the test version of the full-screen home feed, you can still use the bottom navigation bar to access reels, the discovery tab, shopping, and your own profile, and stories will remain at the top of your feed like the present version.

Like every Instagram feature, this one, too was met with a lot of controversies. The major UI change will affect the way we market on the platform significantly?
