Droupadi Murmu: India Steps Towards Representing Marginalised Voices

Droupadi Murmu, former Jharkhand governor, recently took the oath as the 15th President of India. The youngest person to become President, she is also the first tribal woman to hold the position.

In her maiden address to the nation as President, Droupadi acknowledged that she is the first President of India to be born after India’s independence.

Who is Droupadi Murmu?

Droupadi Murmu, 64, is the first Adivasi to hold the position of India’s First Citizen and the Supreme Commander of India’s Armed Forces.

Born into a Santhal family, Murmu was the first girl in her village, Uparbeda (Odisha), to attend college. She fought all odds and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rama Devi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar.

Early Life

Murmu started as a teacher and later entered politics in her home state of Odisha.
Murmu was a Junior Assistant in the State Irrigation and Power Department and later worked at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre at Rairangpur till 1997.

In the year 2015, she made history by becoming the first woman governor of Jharkhand. She was the first Odia woman and tribal leader to be named the governor of an Indian state.
With her win, Droupadi has shattered many glass ceilings and set a path for a hopeful future.

Political Career

1997: Murmu started her political career as a councilor on the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat.

2000: Won the 2000 Odisha Legislative Assembly election from the Rairangpur constituency. She served two terms in the assembly between 2000 and 2009.

2007: Was honored with the ‘Nilakantha Award’ by the Odisha Legislative Assembly for best MLA

2009: Contested in the Lok Sabha election from the Mayurbhani community but lost

2010: Elected as BJP’s District President of the Mayurbhanj district

2013: Re-elected as BJP’s District President of the Mayurbhanj district and was also named as a BJP National Executive

2015: Was appointed the Governor of Jharkhand and was in power throughout her six-year tenure, till 2021

2022: Secured a clear majority win in Presidential elections

Murmu has reiterated her resolve to work toward uplifting the marginalized community.
Her humble origins and inspirational political advancement have showered her with immense support from many political parties. At a time when the political landscape in India is witnessing crucial issues, it will be interesting to see how the goodwill of the new President will bridge political bridges for public welfare and stable governance.
